Our Story
Born in Brazil.
It all started in a dimly lit underground nightclub in São Paulo, Brazil. It was our first night in Brazil and despite us being exhausted from our long flight, our newly made Brazilian friends urged us to go out with them. Despite my objections and excuses, it became apparent … we couldn’t say no to a free invitation in Brazil!
We enter the club and as I walk to the bar to order a drink I hear a stranger in line yell at me “Have you tried Shambu?!”. Many thoughts bounced through my head, mainly - “why is this guy asking me about shampoo here?!”. Through a bit more yelling and confusion I finally determine that he is asking me about Jambu not shampoo! I still have absolutely no idea what this is. However, he seemed like a cool guy and I assumed this is some type of Brazilian drink . I decide to order our group and our newfound friend all a shot of this Jambu drink to get the night started.
The feeling was unlike anything I’d ever tasted. As soon as the drink hit my lips I was overcome with both my tongue and lips tingling and buzzing while also feeling a bit numb! It was really different and more importantly, it was a lot of fun! It didn’t last very long either, just a few minutes and it faded away. It was amazing - the only thing I didn’t like was the earthy bitterness taste.
Throughout the night we ordered more and more shots of this newfound Jambu until the rest of the night became a blur. What a first night in Brazil!
For months after returning home I thought about my experience in Brazil. What was that drink? How does it do that? Where can I get it here in the USA? Should I throw away my entire life to create something that no one has ever heard of?
Well it turns out there weren’t many answers to my questions. I did eventually figure out that Jambu was Cachaça infused with flowers from Jambu plant. From there, It became an obsession to understand everything about this plant.
I loved the sensation, but not the bitter, earthy flavor that came with what I had in Brazil. So I set out to create my own version: something smoother, tastier, and made for the party. Blue like Brazil’s ocean. Fun like its nightlife. And bold enough to get people talking about it after just one shot.
That’s the story of how Brazú was born.
